Gynecomastia: How common is it?
Gynecomastia is a generalised enlargement of breast in feminine shape with an increase in the amount of breast gland tissue in males. It is usually caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly.
Pseudogynecomastia refers to an increase in fat but not glandular tissue in male breasts. It is technically known as Lipomastia.
Gynecomastia is the most common benign disorder of the male breast tissue and affects 35% of men, being most prevalent between the ages of 50 and 69. Which means every third man has some geade of man boobs with him. For example if Delhi's poulation is 10 crore with 5 crore men and 3 crore adult males, approximately 1 crore men will have some grade of gynecomastia in Delhi.
It is normal for up to 70% of adolescent boys to develop gynecomastia. Of these, 75% resolve within two years of onset without treatment. For those who do not resolve for more than two years, surgical removal of breast gland is the best option.
The gynecomastia surgery is a straightforward procedure where enlarged breast gland is removed and excess fat is suctioned off by a plastic surgeon via small tubes. The results are usually permanent.
